Syria: Alfano, Italy pledges 25 million Euros in 2017 to help victims of war

ROME, DECEMBER 17 –  Italy will keep supporting the victims of the war in Syria. The Italian government pledged 25 million Euros in 2017 to finance humanitarian activities inside the country and in the region,  the Minister for Foreign Affairs Angelino Alfano announced tody.

“We want, and we must, save human lives. I conveyed this message to the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura”, Alfano said. The. Minister spoke with the UN envoy two days ago. Italy will continue to work for a negotiated political solution to the Syrian crisis, reiterated Alfano emphasizing the necessity that access to Aleppo should be granted to the UN and the Red Crescent. Alfano also expressed “deep concerns” for the humanitarian emergency in eastern Aleppo and the “unacceptable costs in terms of human lives” that comes with it.

Today the Minister recalled that, since the war started, the Italian cooperation targeted 120 million Euros to support the victims of the Syrian crisis. The money was spent both on the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Syria and to help countries in the region – Lebanon and Jordan in particular – to bear the brunt of refugee arrivals.

Last February a Donors Conference was hosted in London. On that occasion Italy announced a contribution of 400 million dollars for the period 2016-2018. A portion of the sum – about 150 million dollars – is being targeted to humanitarian and development projects of countries in the region. (@OnuItalia)
