Syria: Alfano, 400 million dollars in aid in next three years

"Syrians pain is our pain"

ROME, FEBRUARY 16 – Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano, in a message sent on the occasion of the launch of the “Open Hospitals” project in Syria, said that Italian emergency aid for the Syrian humanitarian crisis since the beginning of the conflict has been more than 120 million euros, both to support the displaced within the country as well as to help reinforce efforts by Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Turkey
in receiving Syrian refugees.

“Yesterday I met at the foreign ministry with UN Special Envoy to Syria Steffan De Mistura, ahead of talks in Geneva at the end of this month,” Alfano said. “Tomorrow I will be visiting Bonn for a ministerial meeting on Syria as well,” he said.

“Syrians pain is our pain. Italy strongly condemns these atrocities”, the Italian Minister said. Alfano recalled that at the London donors conference in February 2016, Italy responded to the appeal for aid to Syria with a three-year commitment of 400 million dollars more, putting it among Europe’s top donors. “Today we are working to respect this commitment,” he added.
