ROME, MARCH 8 – “The International Women Day represents a wonderful opportunity to reflect on your social, economic, political and cultural achievements but it is also a stimulus to continue pursuing the goal of fully realising the principle of gender equality. Men must always walk by your side along this path”, said the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs celebrating the 8th of March.
Alfano took the opportunity to send a message to the female staff of the Italian diplomatic network, increasingly at centre stage on international scenarios, energetically present in theatres of war, in difficult Countries, in emergency situations: “To all of you, in service in Rome or abroad, I would simply like to say Thank You. Thank you for your extraordinary commitment, for your strength, for your great determination and for the priceless and irreplaceable contribution of ideas that you enthusiastically offer in a true spirit of teamwork”.
To mark the date – and to reaffirm its commitment in favour of women’s rights and of the elimination of all forms of gender discrimination – the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has organised the screening of the film “Desert Flower”, distributed in Italy by the independent producer “Ahora!”.
The film tells the true story of Waris Dirie, a Somali migrant woman who became an internationally famous top model in London and the official spokeswoman for the UN’s campaign against female genital mutilation. (@alebal)
