NEW YORK, MARCH 8 – The U.N. Security Council strongly condemned the latest North Korean missile launches, calling them “a grave violation” of its sanctions resolutions . The United Nations’ most powerful body says it deplores all North Korean ballistic missile activity, which contributes to improving its missile delivery systems and increases tensions in the region and beyond.
The council says the tests risk a regional arms race. A council press statement issued Tuesday night also expresses serious concern at what it calls North Korea’s “increasingly destabilizing behavior” and defiance of council resolutions.
Following the strong condemnation expressed by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Italy expressed serious concern for the repeated and flagrant violations of the relevant resolutions of the Security Council: they put international peace and security at risk and challenge the international non-proliferation regime while raising the tension in the region.
During closed doors consultations, the Italian Permanent Representative Sebastiano Cardi called upon North Korea to abandon immediately its nuclear program. As president of the sanctions committee of the UN body, Cardi called upon all member states to request a full implementation of the Security Council resolutions. According to Cardi, an effective sanctions regime is crucial to prevent the development by Pyongyang of its nuclear and missile programs, while at the same time could persuade North Korea to change its attitude and open the path to a peaceful solution for the Korean peninsula and the entire region.
