NEW YORK, 15 MAR – “Women need to be in charge to overcome global challenges. Every accomplishment made in the name of women is an accomplishment for everybody, because the battles for women’s rights are battles for everybody, men included”. The Undersecretary for Gender Equality Maria Elena Boschi spoke to the press after addressing the 61th UN Commission on the status of women.
Boschi is leading the Italian delegation to the Commission. She said that the implementation of “Women, Peace & Security” agenda is central for Italy, and for Italy at the United Nation: “Italy stands with women victims of violence and discrimination fighting for equal access to education worldwide”, she said, pointing out that Italy is historically on the front line, starting at the UN, in its commitment on women issues, especially in the contrast of female genital mutilations and forced marriages.
“The road is long but we are moving along. Besides, there are lots of us committed to the goal”, she added. “The proceedings of these meeting demonstrate that it’s impossible to do without half of the intelligence, half of the competences and of the capacities of our planet”, the Undersecretary said stressing Italy’s commitment: “Lots still needs to be done also in our country, in terms of equal pay and full occupation, but lots has also been done, both in terms of the fight against violence and of conciliation between work and family”.
