Libya: Alfano speaks with Serraj, mutual satisfaction for Rome facilitated dialogue between Tripoli and Tobruk

ROME, APRIL 26 – The Italian Foreign Affairs Minister Angelino Alfano had a telephone conversation on Wednesday with Libyan President Fajez Al Sarraj to express his satisfaction for the the positive and friendly climate of last week meeting in Rome between the President of the Tobruk House of Representatives, Aghila Saleh, and the chairman of the Tripoli State Council Swelhi. Italy played a role in facilitating the Friday meeting, a fact that President Serraj underlined in the phone call.

Alfano reiterated Italy’s full support for the implementation of the National Political Agreement, underlining the central role of the Presidential Council within the process of institutional consolidation of the country. “We cannot allow Libya to fall again in chaos, it would have immediate security consequences in terms of terrorism and human trafficking”, Alfano told the Libyan leader, recalling the Italian Government’s commitment to fostering the institutional framework as provided in the political agreement, as pointed out, inter alia, in the final statement of the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the G7 in Lucca.

“The solution to the crisis can only be political,” Alfano pointed out, adding that “dialogue is the only viable path” and that “Italy will pursue its actions in favor of the pacification of the country”. (@OnuItalia)
