Myanmar: Alfano met Aung San Suu Kyi; support for democracy, challenges ahead

ROME,  MAY 3 – Italy supports the peaceful struggle for democracy and human rights in Myanmar, the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Angelino Alfano, told the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize and Myanmar de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

“The Italian government, the Parliament and civil society have always warmly supported your personal, pacific committente to advance the cause of democracy and human rights”, Alfano said after the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “We also supported since it start the democratic transition in Myanmar, the process of national reconciliation and development”, he added pointing out that “we are also aware of challenges that still have to be met along the not yet finished path towards a full and inclusive democracy”. Alfano assured Suo Kyi that Italy will keep supporting development in Myanmar through the Italian cooperation programs in priority sectors such as governance, agriculture, conservation of cultural heritage, sustainable tourism, development of small and medium enterprises.

The difficult situation in the state of Rakhine and the peace princesse with the ethnic groups were part of the agenda. Yesterday in Brussels, Suu Kyi rejected a decision by the UN’s rights council to investigate allegations of crimes by Myanmar’s security forces against minority Rohingya Muslims. The UN body agreed in March to dispatch a fact-finding mission to the south Asian Asian country over claims of murder, rape and torture in Rakhine state. “We do not agree with it,” Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar’s de facto leader, told a press conference with EU diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini, when asked about the probe. (@OnuItalia)
