NEW YORK, MAY 9 – Over 34,000 people rescued in less than two years and more that 100 smugglers arrested thanks to Operation Sophia “are a clear proof of the European Union added value“, the Italian Permanent Representative to the UN Sebastiano Cardi said today during a UN Security Council meeting on Europe Day in New York.
25 EU countries are participating to the mission led by the Italian Admiral Enrico Credendino in the Mediterranean. “The decision to give the Operation the name of a baby born on board a vessel reminds us that combating human traffickers’ networks is a collective moral duty and a shared security priority”, Cardi said, stressing that Italy will continue to address this plight through a comprehensive approach aimed at tackling its root causes, dismantling the business model of traffickers and saving lives at sea.
Cardi pointed out to the role of Europe as a driver of peace and an agent for development: “The EU is the world’s leading donor, providing more than 50% of global development aid. Bridging humanitarian assistance and development cooperation while promoting human rights, rule of law and good governance throughout the world, the EU is a major partner of the UN and its Agencies in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals”.
The UE High Representative Federica Mogherini addressed the Council and later met the press at the Security Council stake out: “The EU vision is the UN vision. The European Union has become an indispensable partner to build a more cooperative world order”, she said. Yesterday the former Minister of Foreign Affairs attended a celebration of EU Day at the Italian Cultural Institute in New York. “Many had anticipated the end of the Union,. They were wrong”, she said speaking on the day after of the French Presidential elections at a reception attended by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and many UN diplomats. (@OnuItalia).
