NEW YORK, MAY 22 – Thanks to the bravery and patriotism of Iraqi forces and to the endurance of its people, the days of Da’esh in Iraq are numbered, the Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) Ján Kubiš told the Security Council today.
With the liberation of Mosul imminent, the international community must maintain a dual focus on defeating the remaining Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL/Da’esh) forces in Iraq, and on working towards post-conflict security and reconstruction, the United Nations envoy for the country said announcing that UN Secretary-GeneralAntónio Guterres recently received the long-awaited submission of the Iraqi Forces Coalition’s vision of a national settlement.
“As the military defeat of Da’esh in Iraq draws closer, we must not forget that the fight against terrorism is a long-term one, which requires a strategic and preventive focus, as well as the determination to address the root political causes of the terrorist phenomenon”, observed the Italian deputy Permanent representative Inigo Lambertini in a speech to the Council, stressing that the unity of purpose which has developed in the fight against Da’esh is an opportunity to strengthen national reconciliation.
“In order to prevent the resurgence of Da’esh, the focus must be on providing stability to liberated areas”, Lambertini said: “As Coalition leader in the training of Iraqi police forces, Italy attaches the highest importance to this objective. The Italian Carabinieri trained more than 7.200 local and federal police units, while and efforts are underway to increase this capacity.
“Furthermore, Italy is ready to engage with the Iraqi Government to preserve and consolidate the results achieved so far, also with a view to broader Security Sector Reform efforts. This includes specific training on the protection of cultural heritage and the prevention of illicit trafficking of artifacts”. UNSCR 2347, a joint initiative of Italy and France, a few months ago became a helpful tool for integrating the cultural dimension into post-conflict recovery efforts. (@OnuItalia)
