Italy is aware of the complexity and transnational nature of many of the challenges touching the Sahelian region. For this reason, strongly support the G5 Sahel, and all the initiatives that the International community, through the United Nations and other relevant Organizations, put in place to enhance the stability of the region. Concretely, Italy takes part to the mission Minusma in Mali and to the Cspd missions in Mali and Niger, besides implementing training activity in border control and antiterrorism investigations to the benefit of several countries in this area. Italy also participates to the European technical missions in the region, and strongly encourages their regionalization, as well as any initiative aimed to increase the coordination among Sahelian countries. NEW YORK, JUNE 13 – While in New York for meetings at the United Nations, the Italian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Enzo Amendola told the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Mali, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, that Italy will financially contribute to Minusma through its Trust Fund.
The Italian Permanent Representative Sebastiano Cardi signed the agreement finalizing the contribution of over half a million Euros. The pledge is a follow up to a request of support sent last November by the Special Representative. The contribution will be used to implement new border control guidelines and to rehabilitate and to equip the Gendarmerie headquarters in Gao. The money will also be spent to buy fuel supplies for patrol units in the region of Mopti.
