Enriching rural radio broadcasting in Eastern States of Sudan: The Italy-Sudan-UNESCO cooperation

KHARTOUM, JUNE 14 – Thanks to the signature of a technical agreement between UNESCO and the Ministry for Information of the Sudan, the initiative: “Promoting human development and civic virtues among the Sudanese rural communities: supporting the rural radio broadcasting in the Eastern States” has officially started. The project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development and Cooperation – AICS, for an amount of 300.000 Euros, will be implemented by UNESCO in strict cooperation with the Khartoum AICS Office.

The initiative aims at strengthening community radios in the rural areas in Eastern Sudan by promoting human development, through training, the development of new educational radio contents and programs, and at spreading civic virtues principles in the rural communities and strengthening rural radio networks. The geographical focus of the program will be in a region where the Italian Cooperation is already working on several sectors of cooperation (health- poverty alleviation- gender equality-migration).

Recognizing the value of the initiative in promoting human development and the principles that inspired the program, the official support of the Ministry of Information has a deep political value in this African Country, especially considering the geographical scope of the project. The Eastern States (Red Sea, Kassala and Gedaref) are still considered in need of help and assistance, in particular today, due to illegal migration routes coming from the Horn of Africa, an issue the Italian Cooperation is seriously investing in.

“It is a very important signal” – said the Italian Ambassador to the Sudan, Fabrizio Lobasso -“Sudan is on its way for a more liberal information and communication system, as a tool of solidarity, inclusion and social integration: the tactic of the information control is slowly giving way to the strategy of knowledge management!”

The Minister of Information, Ahmed Bilal Osman, thanked the Government and the Italian Cooperation for the generous contribution and UNESCO for its efforts in implementing it; he also stressed that thanks to this kind of initiatives Sudan is gaining stability and peace, underlining that the Italian contribution is essential.
