PALERMO, JUNE 21 – “The unique split term in the UN Security Council between Italy and the Netherlands embodies the spirit of European solidarity”, the Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs Angelino Alfano said today in Palermo, at the closing ceremony of the Netherlands and Italy Model United Nations (Nimun).
Attending the closing session was Alfano’s Dutch colleague Bert Koenders. “Congratulations for the great work of these past days. Our two countries stood together accomplishing great results”, said the Italian Minister, recalling that “the issues of the agenda were inspired by the legacy of the judge Giovanni Falcone”. The Italian prosecutor killed by Mafia 25 years ago near Palermo “was a firm believer in international cooperation”.
NIMUN is a diplomatic simulation for Dutch and Italian students convened to celebrate the split non-permanent seat of the two countries in the Security Council. “Protecting Cultural Heritage in Armed Conflicts” and “Food Security in Chronic Conflict Zones” were among the themes discussed during the Model UN which also coincided with the visit of the Dutch Royal Family in Palermo. “The Netherlands is a proud partner of Italy in building peace and security, combating crime and defending human rights,” King Willem-Alexander said during the visit.(@OnuItalia)
