ROME, AUGUST 21 – All international community initiatives in the Libya should go under the United Nations umbrella, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, agreed in a telephone conversation with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Ghassan Salame’.
Alfano expressed his appreciation for the outcome of the recent visit that Special Representative Salame’ made in Libya, as it represents a tangible sign of the UN’s support to the political process.
Alfano and Salame’ agreed on the need to bring back under the UN’s umbrella all international actions aimed at stabilising Libya. Alfano said he hoped for a more widespread and structured presence of the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, in Libya. Lastly, Alfano and Salame’ said they would keep in close contact in the next few days.
