NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 19 – Good practices between cooperation and security: two words which seem, but are not, a contradiction in terms. Italy sets an example: “In a world where there is no “zero risk”, we have combined security and solidarity. We have shown that it’s possible to save lives; welcome desperate people escaping persecution and wars; while also being rigorous against those who despise our values and our freedoms”, the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Angelino Alfano, told a high-level debate with colleagues from African countries at the United Nations today.
“We have saved the honor of Europe and put our country on the right side of history, but we do not want applause. Instead, we ask for more cooperation, more solidarity and more shared responsibility”, Alfano told the debate with the colleagues of Tunisia, Uganda, Sudan, Niger and Kenya co-organized with AVSI Foundation.
“Today, alongside international authorities and figures from civil society and business, we want to prove that no, cooperation and security are not contradictory. On the contrary: development cooperation and the need for security go together. Every dollar, reserved for the first (that is, for development aid), and, when used properly, transparently and corresponding to real needs, is an investment towards meeting the need for security demanded by citizens”, the Secretary General of AVSI Foundation Giampaolo Silvestri told the meeting. “The combination between training and employment is the best investment for security. It must be a long term commitment”, he added explaining that “each single dollar invested in cooperation is a long term investment in the security of our cities”.
Silvestri stated that “education and work are complements which must go hand-in-hand”. A concrete example was brought to the debate by Elena Riva, President and co-founder of the food chain Panino Giusto: She talked of the training program organized by her group tanks to which also this year 15 migrant boys and girls were welcomed to learn the trade and soon they will have concrete opportunities of employment in popular food chains such as Rosso Pomodoro, Panini Durini, Grom, California Bakery, Ca’Puccino and many others.(@OnuItalia)
