ROME, OCTOBER 30 – A European Union civil mission departing in the next few weeks for Iraq will include for the first time a specialist in cultural heritage, the EU High Representative Federica Mogherini announced today in Rome. The presence of the expert in the European task force was added after an input from Italy.
“It was an Italian idea adopted by the EU”, Mogherini said, adding that, from now on, “all European peace missions will have written in the mandate the protection of cultural heritage”.
The European initiative is inspired by the Italian committente to include a cultural dimension in all peacekeeping missions. This effort was at the base of the agreement between Italy and UNESCo for the task force Unite4Heritage, the so called “blue helmets for culture”. (@OnuItalia)
