NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 15 – After “constructive” consultations on the situation in Darfur, the UN Security Council expressed support to the mediation efforts led by President Thabo Mbeki of the AUHIP (African Union High-Level Implementation Panel for Sudan and South Sudan), assisted by Joint Special Representative Jeremiah Mamabolo, the Italian Permanent representative to the UN Sebastiano Cardi said after charing the meeting.
The Council, Cardi said at the UN Security Council stake out, called on the non-signatory parties of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur to resume talks. It also assessed the efforts by the Government of Sudan in the disarmament campaign and called on all parties, including local militias, to refrain from violence. The Council members expressed concern on the reports of violence against civilians and the humanitarian situation, in particular attacks against internally displaced people and the security situation in Kalma, Sortoni.(@OnuItalia)
