GENEVA, JANUARY 31 – The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) praised the Italian government for contributing in 2017 to UNHCR’s activities in 20 countries with a sum of over $ 51 million.
“The Italian Government confirms the great commitment to refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced persons in the world, increasing its contribution by 64%, from 31.3 million dollars in 2016 to 51.4 million dollars this year , standing in 12th place among UNHCR donors globally”, the UN refugee agency said.
There was also the generosity of private citizens, companies and Italian foundations that have donated over 24 million dollars to improve the status of refugees and asylum seekers in the world.
Over 65 million people are forced to leave their homes all over the world. 84% of refugees are hosted in middle and low income countries, close to crisis areas. The international community is called to act in solidarity to support the protection efforts made by these countries and the host communities, responding to the need to share more equally the responsibilities of welcoming refugees and assistance in rebuilding their lives.
“While the need for a common effort to find appropriate solutions to prevent and resolve crises that cause suffering and forced displacement is emerging with increasing clarity, it is equally necessary that, in the meantime, refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced persons are adequately protected and assisted”, said the Geneva based agency: “This is a collective responsibility, which calls into question above all the donor governments, who are asked to strengthen the appropriations for people forced to flee to save their lives, increase the shares of resettlement and give more opportunities to refugees in host countries, while encouraging a climate of openness and welcome”.
