Di Maio chairs meeting of Center European Initiative

NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 25TH- The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, chaired the meeting of Foreign Ministers, members to the InCE (Center European Initiative). The meeting was held at the margin of this week’s General Assembly taking place at the United Nations Headquarters of New York.

In his opening speech, Di Maio highlighted the necessity to further valorize and renovate the InCE, as agreed upon in the Trieste Declaration. The Declaration, signed on the 12th of June, was the result of a meeting entitled “Center European Initiative, thirty years and towards the future: common vision, shared values, european standards, strong regional cooperation”. The Declaration specified those areas in which further cooperation is to be pursued, for example the establishment of a local dimension to the InCE and the development of an InCE Agenda for Young people.

A constructive exchange of ideas regarding the ways in which coordination among the 17 Member States can be reinforced for the achievement of UN related goals followed Di Maio’s speech. Of particular focus were the ways in which further InCE cooperation could help advance the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and the development of political actions better targeted to the needs and demands of young people.

InCE was founded in 1989 and represents an intergovernmental forum for regional cooperation. Italy is a founder and primary financier, and will furthermore be chairing the forum until the end of 2019. The objectives of InCE revolve around its two principal, medium-term priorities of: “Promoting Connectedness” and “Valuing Diversity”. InCE is a permanent observer at the United Nation’s General Assembly. (SB@OnuItalia)
