Italy participating in experts meeting of Biological Weapons Convention

GENEVA, JULY 29 – Italy is participating in the two weeks meeting of experts of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), the international agreement  that prohibits biological and toxin weapons. Addressing disarmament and security issues, to build confidence, counter proliferation and enhance peaceful uses of biological science and technology. 

The Biological Weapons Convention is the first multilateral disarmament treaty banning the development, production and stockpiling of an entire category of weapons of mass destruction. It was opened for signature on 10 April 1972. The BWC entered into force on 26 March 1975. The  focus is on strengthening cooperation and assistance among 178 States parties. Italy confirmed its commitment against pandemics and infectious diseases. Between 2017 and 2019 Italian Cooperation contributed 140 million Euro to the Global Fund, which operates in more than 100 countries.

The Second Review BWC (1986) agreed that the States Parties were to implement a number of confidence-building measures (CBM) in order to prevent or reduce the occurrence of ambiguities, doubts and suspicions and in order to improve international co-operation in the field of peaceful biological activities. The CBMs were expanded by the Third Review Conference (1991). (@OnuItalia)
